Despite the severe damage to the ship, the Stark’s crew were able to save the ship that day due to their heroic actions.

According to the National Museum of the U.S. Navy, the frigate sailed to Bahrain and was repaired at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Following tours in the Atlantic and Middle East, the Stark was decommissioned in 1999. She was then scrapped in 2006.

At the annual memorial event, the names of all 37 sailors are read aloud. The program also concludes with a rifle salute.

Last year, survivors like Armando Asencio shared what the last few decades have been like for him.

“It’s been a long time, but it’s always there, every day,” Asencio said. “We remember those that are not here with us.”

For William McLoud, the healing journey has been a painful process. But he’s grateful it’s a journey he’s not facing alone.

“Ninety percent of the healing actually came from healing with them,” McLoud said. “Talking to these guys and expressing the emotions that you still have.”
