JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An armed man wanted in South Carolina on a sexual battery charge was killed in Oceanway on Tuesday when a St. Johns County deputy and U.S. Marshal shot him, authorities said.

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said in a news conference that the U.S. Marshal’s FAST team, which includes members of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, was watching the man, who had warrants for his arrest in South Carolina and was also wanted in connection with a fatal stabbing in Jacksonville last week.

JSO reported a deadly stabbing on May 16 on LaMarche Drive in the Normandy Village area, but Waters did not specify if that was the same stabbing the man was wanted for.

Waters said a JSO officer spotted a stolen car parked at a Circle K gas station on North Main Street and New Berlin Road.

The officer saw the driver and a woman get out of the vehicle to go inside the store. Once he confirmed that one of the men in the vehicle was the person they were looking for, the officer went to arrest the driver.

Waters said at the same time that the JSO officer was taking the driver into custody, a St. Johns County deputy and a U.S. Marshal shot and killed the armed man who was wanted in South Carolina.

Waters did not provide any further details on what led to the shooting, stating he would leave those details up to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to communicate. The FDLE is investigating the shooting.

No JSO officers shot at the man, Waters reiterated, and no members of law enforcement were injured.
