A school resource officer confronted the man, who was sitting on the sidewalk near Risley Middle School, police said. They have not revealed how the man died.

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — A man died after he was restrained by a school resource officer and a “concerned citizen” Tuesday afternoon outside Risley Middle School, according to the Glynn County Schools Police Department Chief Johnny Davis.

When asked for comment, Glynn County Schools referred First Coast News to comments Davis had made to the Brunswick News.

Davis told the Brunswick News that a concerned citizen alerted the Glynn County Schools Department that a man was behaving strangely while sitting on the sidewalk outside of the school, on Southport Parkway in Brunswick.

He said school was about to let out, so the officer went to talk to the man. The main “initiated physical contact.”

The officer “subdued” the man with help from the concerned citizen. The man started to “have shallow breathing,” and the officer called for emergency medical attention.

Davis confirmed that the man later died.

The “concerned citizen” also hurt her ankle at some point.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigations is working to find out who the man was, how he died and why he was outside of the school.
