JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting in the Brentwood area Sunday at 3:50 p.m., according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said a black sedan stopped at the 27th Street and Main intersection, near Andrew Jackson High School.

Police said the driver’s side door opened and there was a struggle between the driver and an individual in the backseat and they exchanged words.

The driver stepped back and shot multiple times in the car.

Simultaneously, a JSO officer pulled up and saw the man shooting, so he shot at the suspect, striking him multiple times.

The suspect went to the ground in a nearby parking lot and Jacksonville Fire and Rescue took him to the hospital where he later died.

The person in the backseat did not get shot, but he was taken to the hospital as well.

Before the shooting started, a person fled from the vehicle.

JSO said it is interviewing several witnesses and pulling surveillance from surrounding businesses.

The State’s Attorney Office is conducting its own investigation.

Police didn’t say if the man who ran away from the car is being considered a suspect, they just need to find and talk with him.

A man said a stray bullet went through a wall in his house and just missed him while he was lying down in bed.

“I was lying down on my bed with my girlfriend and my two big dogs. The bullet came flying right over my bed frame by about 10 or 12 inches above my head. From then we walked outside and came out front and noticed there was a crime scene unit,” John Landers said.

Mark Romano, who is the JSO Director of Investigations and Homeland Security said this is a complicated situation with a lot of moving parts.

“I would describe it as putting a piece to a puzzle together. You have pieces all over the place down there. We are just trying to put the puzzle together and figure it all out,” Romano said.

This is the third officer-involved shooting in Jacksonville.

Investigators said anyone with information can call JSO at 904-630-0500 or email jsocrimetips@jaxsheriff.org.
