JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The new chief of school police for Duval County Public Schools will be officially sworn in Thursday at a ceremony at the Duval County School Board headquarters.

Jackson Short is taking over after former police chief Greg Burton had to step down for medical reasons.

“I am humbled and honored to serve in such an impactful role and lead a stellar team of law enforcement professionals who single-mindedly work each day to protect children and ensure our schools are safe,” Short said after he was chosen by the School Board last month.

The University of North Florida and American Military University alum is a veteran law enforcement officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, where he served as a department director, division chief and police lieutenant.

He was also a chief investigator for the State Attorney’s Office and has an extensive background in leadership training programs such as the FBI Florida Executive Development Seminar.

Along with Short, K-9 Penny, the newest member of the School Police K-9 Unit, will be sworn in for duty Thursday.
