FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – Family, friends, and U.S. Navy sailors surprised a World War II veteran with a 100th birthday celebration at his home in Fleming Island Sunday afternoon.

Robert Roland Powers Sr. was born on June 13, 1924, in Clarksville, Tennessee. He served during World War II from 1943 to 1946.

“We were in the Seabees back then,” Powers said.

Powers said he never thought that one day he would be celebrating his 100th birthday.

“I can’t believe it. It’s wonderful,” Powers said.

But his children said they were not too surprised.

“He just never quits. That’s a whole generation, they never quit. That’s why they’re called the greatest, ‘Greatest Generation,’” Lynn Powers, one of Robert’s sons, said.

It was a full house at the Powers’ residence Sunday where dozens of the veteran’s loved ones gathered to celebrate his life and service to the country. In fact, Powers had a surprise visit from four U.S. Navy sailors.

“It’s pretty incredible, honestly, and then be part of the original Seabees back in the day, that’s insane. It’s a milestone to say the least,” U.S. Navy Sailor Chapman said.

Powers took the opportunity to give a piece of advice to those younger than him.

“Just enjoy life. All you have is today,” Powers said. “I try to be joyful and be happy and try to crack jokes.”

As to the secret to longevity, Powers said he could not share — because “it’s a secret.”

Happy birthday, Mr. Powers, and thank you for your service!
