JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A man died Thursday night after he was pulled from the water while night fishing near Fort George Island in Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

JSO’s Sergeant Reed says at approximately 10:26 p.m., patrol officers responded to the 11000 block of Heckscher Drive in reference to “an individual in distress being pulled from the water.”

Police say first responders with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department also responded to the scene, as they pronounced him dead at the scene.

“The victim is an adult white male,” Reed tells First Coast News. “The investigation so far has revealed the victim and a witness were in the area to do some night fishing when the victim became unresponsive in the water.”

JSO says they do not believe foul play was involved in the man’s death and that they will coordinate with the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine an exact cause of death.
